FIND OUT MORE ABOUT NORDIC WALKING

Nordic walking, as the name suggests, comes to us from the Nordic countries, and more specifically from Finland. For the record, this sporting discipline was initially developed totrain cross-country ski champions who needed to replace skiing on snow in the off-season with a similar discipline, which is how this activity came to be known as ski walking.

Practised with poles as for skiing, Nordic walking is invigorating and similar in intensity to brisk or sporty walking. The poles you use on your outings will also allow you to stretch at the start and finish.

This physical activity is an all-round sport that works almost 80% of the body’s muscles. It’s the perfect balance between a leisurely walk and jogging, with no negative effects on the joints.

As well as its physical benefits, it also offers a moment of communion with nature, relaxation and rejuvenation.

Whether you’re looking to improve your stamina, tone your body or simply enjoy an outdoor activity, Nordic walking could be an excellent option to explore. And who knows? Maybe you’ll discover that you’re a Nordic skier, without even needing the snow.

How to calculate the number of calories burned with Nordic walking

The result displayed is expressed in Kcal and is calculated using the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task). The MET for each activity is the result of statistical data and cannot therefore be interpreted as an exact calculation, but rather as an estimate taking into account the MET value and the ratio between the time spent doing an activity and the weight of the individual.

For example: The MET value for Nordic walking is 5. This means that a person who does Nordic walking with sticks consumes 5 times more energy than when resting. This varies, of course, with the level of intensity, as we’ll see below.

MET values for different levels of walking intensity

  • Calm walking MET = 3
  • Brisk walking MET = 4.5
  • Nordic Walking MET = 5
  • Olympic walking MET = 6.5

Discover the detailed formula to calculate your daily energy expenditure while Nordic walking

Consumption in Kcal per minute = (MET*3.5*Weight in kilos)/200

This means that for a person weighing 60 kilos doing Nordic walking for 30 minutes:
Consumption in Kcal per minute = (5*3.5*60)/200 = 5.25 Kcal/min
So for 30 minutes = 5.25*30 = 158 kcal for 30 minutes
