FIND OUT MORE ABOUT RUNNING ON THE TREADMILL

The treadmill has many advantages, one of the main ones being that you can run at home when the weather doesn’t allow it. What’s more, if you’re recovering from an injury, you’ll be able to rediscover the pleasures of running on a cushioned surface, while avoiding the impact of a hard surface that can traumatise your knees.

Treadmills on the market today come with a wide range of features, allowing you to combine the pleasure of running with watching your favourite morning programme, browsing on your tablet, getting some fresh air with a built-in fan, as well as monitoring your heart rate and memorising your programmes and history for even greater motivation.

All in all, the treadmill offers a host of benefits that make it an indispensable training tool for those looking to maintain a regular fitness routine, without depending on the weather. Its ability to cushion impact is particularly beneficial for those recovering from an injury or who simply want to preserve their joints, while enjoying the cardiovascular benefits of running.

The technological aspect of modern treadmills adds another level of appeal to this equipment. With the ability to watch your favourite TV programme, browse your tablet, enjoy a cool-down with a built-in fan and even track your training data, running on a treadmill becomes a complete and motivating experience.

So whether you’re looking to get fit, lose weight, or simply stay active, the treadmill is an option to consider. It gives you the freedom to train at your own pace, according to your personal goals, while offering the comfort and convenience of staying at home. So why not put on your trainers and start your journey to better fitness with your treadmill?

How to calculate the number of calories burned running on the treadmill

The result displayed is expressed in Kcal and is calculated from the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task). The MET for each activity is the result of statistical data and cannot therefore be interpreted as an exact calculation, but rather as an estimate that takes into account the MET value and the ratio between the time spent doing an activity and the weight of the individual.

For example: the MET value for running on a treadmill (at an average pace of around 8km/h) is 8. This means that a person running on a treadmill at this pace consumes 8 times more energy than they would at rest during their session. This varies, of course, with the level of intensity, as we’ll see below. The more intensive the pace, the greater the energy expenditure!

MET values for different treadmill intensity levels

  • Treadmill (8k/h) MET = 8
  • Treadmill (9.5k/h) MET = 10.5
  • Treadmill (13k/h) MET = 13

Consumption in Kcal per minute = (METs*3.5*Weight in kilos)/200

This gives for a 60kg person running on a treadmill at 8km/h for 30 minutes:
Consumption in Kcal per minute = (8*3.5*60)/200 = 8.4 Kcal/min
So for 30 minutes = 8.4*30 = 252 kcal for 30 minutes
